Beijing reported a surge in inbound tourism in the first quarter of 2025, as the Chinese capital ramps up its efforts to improve travel and payment convenience for visitors and diversify its tourism experiences. The city received 891,000 inbound tourists in the January–March period, up 61.3% year on year, with inbound tourism continuing to heat up following China's further relaxation of its visa-free transit policy. Three documentary heritage collections submitted by China — the Bianzhong of Marquis Yi of Zeng, the Steles of Shaolin Temple, and the Trilingual Inscription — have been inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced on April 17, 2025. With the latest additions, China now has 18 entries in the international register. A stunning light show themed "Tide of the East, Light for the Future" was staged on landmark buildings along the Huangpu River in Shanghai to mark the 35th anniversary of the development and opening-up of Shanghai's Pudong New Area on April 17, 2025. Established in 1990, Pudong has become a prime destination for foreign capital.
