A blooming tree in the Imperial Garden.

More than an architectural marvel, the Forbidden City stands as a living chronicle, weaving together China's most ancient wisdom, magnificent architecture and rich history. Every brick and stone whispers tales of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368–1911) — echoing the opulent reigns of its 24 emperors and preserving vivid tableaux of bygone palatial life.

In the cycle of solar terms, the Forbidden City — bathed in dappled light amidst the foliage of shifting seasons — unveils ever-changing beauty. In addition to its grandeur, majesty and solemnity, it reveals a subtle warmth, softness and delicacy.

Chinese celebrity photographer Li Shaobai has devoted himself to photographing the Forbidden City for more than 30 years. Through his captivating images, he expresses a photographer's understanding and interpretation of this imperial landmark. His lens frames every dimension of the palace — from empty halls and quiet courtyards, to doors and windows with fading paint, and wild grass growing in forgotten corners. He immortalizes moments where the Forbidden City transforms under shifting weather, light and seasons — each fleeting mood etched into eternity.
