He Xueqing, president of the Macao Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM).
The year 2024 marked the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland. Over the decades, the Macao Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM) has played a crucial role in safeguarding workers' rights, driving economic development, and fostering social harmony in Macao. At its helm, He Xueqing has exemplified dedication, leading the FAOM through profound transformations. Her outstanding leadership and deep commitment to the people have left an indelible mark on Macao's development.
Lifetime of dedication
Born in 1959 in Macao, He Xueqing has learned the value of hard work early in life. Her upbringing fostered a deep compassion for those in need and a determination to help others improve their lives.
A lifelong admirer of traditional Chinese culture, He Xueqing was inspired by the poetic lines of Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) poet Huang Zunxian: "Every inch of the rivers and mountains of the land is as precious as gold." She views Macao as an inseparable part of its motherland, China, and its workers as vital contributors to Macao and even the nation's productive forces and progress.
He Xueqing's journey with the trade union began in the 1970s. She has since devoted herself to advocating for workers' rights and dignity. Working tirelessly at the grassroots level, she gained a nuanced understanding of employees' needs, striving to address their concerns with patience and empathy. For her, every worker's problem was a matter of utmost importance, and her hands-on approach earned her the trust of Macao's labor force.
With Macao's rapid economic development at the turn of the century, the issue of protecting workers' rights and interests has become increasingly prominent. Thanks to her unremitting efforts, the FAOM not only successfully mediated numerous labor disputes, but also promoted the introduction and improvement of a series of labor laws and regulations, providing comprehensive social services and benefits for employees.
In 2008, He Xueqing's efforts culminated in her election as president of the FAOM. Under her leadership, the FAOM continues to work to protect workers' rights and nurture their personal and professional growth. Her contributions were formally recognized in 2019 when she was awarded the Honorable Medal of Silver Lotus Flower by the government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
