Peking Opera, a traditional Chinese art form originating in Beijing with a history spanning some 200 years, holds a unique position due to its early association with the imperial court. Recognizing its significance, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization approved the inclusion of Peking Opera on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on November 16, 2010.

Over the past two centuries, Peking Opera has evolved alongside profound societal changes. How can we ensure its preservation and relevance in modern times, allowing classical culture to thrive with renewed appeal?

In March of this year, the National People's Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) convened in Beijing. According to this year's government work report, China will enhance the protection and preservation of intangible cultural heritage. During these sessions, China News Release interviewed Yuan Huiqin, a member of the National Committee of the CPPCC and artistic director of the National Peking Opera Company (CNPOC).

Yuan expressed to our reporter, "Peking Opera is not only a source of pride for Chinese civilization but also a shared heritage for all humanity."
