Wandering in the barrier-free garden of the Xuanwu Lake Park in Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province, people handicapped with eye problems can walk by the rippling lake, smelling the fragrance of flowers and enjoying the singing of birds. They can also identify their location by dint of handrails or through the scent of flowers, and appreciate plants based on the induction-type voice-guided broadcasting facilities.
On March 31, 2023, the Disabled Persons' Federation of Peng'an County, Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, organizes people with disabilities to experience a barrier-free environment of the city.
The construction of barrier-free environment forms the foundation for ensuring equal, adequate, and convenient participation and integration of people with disabilities and the elderly in social life.
On June 28, 2023, China adopted the Barrier-Free Environment Creation Law which went into official implementation on September 1, 2023. The media hailed this as a gift to the 32nd "International Day of Persons With Disabilities," which falls on December 3, 2023.
According to the new law, when constructing, renovating or expanding roads, public buildings and public transportation facilities, all cities and towns will have to incorporate barrier-free facilities into such process.
Much improved barrier-free environment
Currently, the number of elderly people aged 60 and above has exceeded 280 million in China, while that of people with disabilities totals 85 million. They all need an accessible environment so as to live a normal life.
