On December 20, 1999, at midnight Beijing time, the governments of China and Portugal held a handover ceremony at the Pavilion of Gardens of the Macao Cultural Center. The central government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) resumed sovereignty over Macao, as Macao returned to the motherland. This is another issue related to the restoration of Chinese sovereignty that was resolved by the PRC through the "one country, two systems" policy after Hong Kong's return on July 1, 1997.
"One country, two systems" refers to the implementation of socialism in the mainland of the PRC, while capitalism is practiced in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. This is the basic national policy put forward by the Chinese government to solve the problem of the peaceful reunification of the mainland and Taiwan and also to resume the exercise of Chinese sovereignty in Hong Kong and Macao.
The facts eloquently prove that the practice of "one country, two systems" in Macao has been successful. Under the "one country, two systems" policy, not only has excellent traditional Chinese culture been passed down and flourished in Macao, but also diverse cultures with Chinese culture as the mainstream have emerged, allowing different ethnic groups living in Macao to coexist harmoniously, bringing unprecedented vitality to this historic cultural city of Macao.
