China ranks second in the world in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), second only to the United States. However, this is not like what some Western media say China is already a developed country. Part of the reason why this is not true is that China has a weak foundation, a large population and uneven development.
This world's second largest economy has a low per capita GDP ranking. Overall, many people have only just been lifted out of poverty last year. In order to alleviate poverty, the Chinese government and local governments have come up with many initiatives to effectively address the issue. One way is to send science and technology commissioners to impoverished areas.
These commissioners are sent to help solve issues related to agriculture, rural areas and farmers. They are all professionals in science and technology, and specialize in the development of characteristic industries, and the construction of agricultural science and technology parks and industrialization bases.
On Nov. 11, 2022, in Sumeng Township, Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province, a commissioner from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences is promoting a new variety of corn at the corn planting demonstration base via a live broadcast platform to help farmers increase income.
Pioneering move
In the 1990s, as a large agricultural city in north Fujian Province in southeast China, Nanping faced a dilemma in its agricultural economy. What made matters worse was that in June 1998, northern Fujian where Nanping was located was hit by serious flooding.
