The year 2023 marks the 65th anniversary of the erection of the Monument to the People's Heroes at the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing.
The monument was meant to pass down the spirit of struggle from generation to generation, which, with the People's Republic of China (PRC) being founded in 1949, the Chinese government and the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee deemed of vital importance for the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Decision to erect monument
From September 21 to 30, 1949, the 10 days immediately before the founding ceremony of the PRC, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held its first plenary session in Beiping (Beijing today). The joyful CPPCC representatives greeted the forthcoming founding of the PRC, and proposed the establishment of a monument to commemorate the people's heroes who had sacrificed their lives in the people's war of liberation and the people's revolution.
