In 2022, China completed the afforestation of 3.83 million hectares, planted or restored 3.21 million hectares of grassland, and treated 1.85 million hectares of rock-desertified land. China currently has 231 million hectares of forests, covering 24.02% of the land, and 265 million hectares of grassland, with 50.32% comprehensively vegetated.

Science-based greening 

In 2022, some 3.83 million hectares of afforestation was completed, including 1.2 million hectares of artificial afforestation, 170,000 hectares of afforestation through aerial seeding, 1.04 million hectares of closing hillsides for afforestation, and restoration of 1.42 million hectares of degraded forests.

Environmental improvement 

A total of 72 ecological protection and restoration projects were undertaken in the critically vulnerable regions. The first two batches of 19 integrated protection and restoration projects of mountains, rivers, forests, farmland, lakes, grass and sand were organized in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025). An additional 20 pilot land greening projects were implemented and 63,000 km² of soil-eroded areas were treated.
