Editor's Note: The August 2022 issue of China News Release published the article "The Lindesays' Two-Generation 'Great Wall Bond,'" covering the story of Thomas Lindesay, commonly known as Tommy, a graduate of the School of International Studies of Peking University, and his family. Tommy told us he wanted to emulate his father William to embark on an expedition along the Ming Great Wall, the best-preserved sections of the Great Wall, built by the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Now, he has realized his dream in the company of his brother James, or Jimmy, and the Lindesay family has set three records thereof.
Recently, British brothers Jimmy (28) and Tommy Lindesay (21) completed a 131-day marathon run along the main line of the Ming Great Wall, 35 years after their father William, who became the first foreigner to make a journey on foot along the Great Wall in 1987.
The two started the 3,000-kilometer run from the Taolai River in Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province, on July 15, 2022. On November 22, they arrived at the Laolongtou ("Old Dragon's Head") of the Shanhai Pass on the coast of the Bohai Sea, and thus set three records.
They are the first brothers to complete the run from the Jiayu Pass to the Shanhai Pass. Tommy is the youngest person to finish a non-stop full-length trek on the Great Wall. The Lindesays are the only family with two generations having completed hiking along the main line of the Ming Great Wall.
