China's Ocean Development Shows Steady Growth

China released the 2022 China Ocean Development Index Report at the opening ceremony of the World Ocean Week in Xiamen, Fujian Province, on November 10, 2022. According to the report, China's Ocean Development Index in 2021 stood at 117.5, up 4.4% over the same period of the previous year, indicating a good head start for the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025).

China's marine economy has shown a robust recovery, and people's well-being has been improving. The economic livelihood index in 2021 was 119.4, an increase of 5.6% over the previous year; and the average annual growth rate of that from 2016 to 2021 was 3%.

The science and technology innovation index in 2021 reached 121.8, up 5.7% over the previous year; and the average annual growth rate of that from 2016 to 2021 was 3.3%.

In 2021, China's gross ocean product surpassed 9 trillion yuan for the first time. From 2016 to 2021, the added value of emerging marine industries registered an annual average of increase of 13%. Since 2015, the per capita share of marine products has remained above 23 kilograms annually.

In 2021, the research and development (R&D) expenditures of China's ocean research institutions under key supervision doubled that of 2015. From 2016 to 2021, the number of patents granted per 10,000 marine R&D personnel grew by 7.6% annually. In 2021, the revenue from transformed scientific and technological achievements of marine research institutions went up by 43.4% over the previous year.
