China's Public Healthcare Undertakings 

On September 7, the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee held the "China in the Past Decade" press conference to introduce the achievements in China's public healthcare since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012. 

1.36 bln, 27.7% 

In the past decade, the number of people covered by basic medical insurance exceeded 1.36 billion, and the proportion of health care expenses borne by individuals dropped to 27.7%. 

13.98 mln, 72% 

By 2021, there were 13.98 million medical workers in China, 72% of them working at the grassroots level. 

196 

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) had been available in 196 countries and regions by 2021. 

78.2 

The average life expectancy in China rose from 74.8 years to 78.2 years in the past decade. 

Over 55% 

By 2021, upwards of 55% of the young couples have two children or more, as against 35% a decade ago. 

Over 300, 72, 4 

China is now capable of detecting more than 300 pathogens within 72 hours, making it possible for China to reduce the reporting time for public health emergencies to less than four hours. 

10 mln 

The health care system has helped nearly 10 million households falling into or relapsing into poverty because of illness to shake off poverty. 

980,000 

As of the end of 2021, China had nearly 980,000 grassroots medical and health institutions, including 35,000 township hospitals, 599,000 village clinics, and 36,000 community health service centers and stations.
